-Learning Objectives-

  • Participants will complete the workshop with the understanding that they can also tell stories through photography.
  • Participants will learn how to make use of their mobile phone cameras to tell their stories. They will experience that it takes discipline, imaginations and persistence to capture a good photo.
  • It is not just about learning the technicality of photography, it is a journey where they and their cameras becomes ONE.

About Alex Siew

Alex Siew incorporates soul into a craft that is often perceived as mundane by channelling his flair for creativity and attention to detail for creating images overflowing with imagination. In year 2000 he started his career as a photographer with Singapore’s Ministry of Defense (MINDEF) followed by being a photojournalist with the Singapore Press Holdings in 2003. He is currently the chief photographer of several photography firms.

Through the years of his photography journey, he has achieved various accolades. Winning an award at the SOAA 2008. The following year he was presented with two prestigious awards from UK based ‘Master Photographers Association for Professional Photographers’.

His photograph titled ‘Inner strength’ was judged the Winner in the Contemporary Portrait Category and his other entry entitled ‘Hero’ was highly commended under the same category. He was also awarded the “Master Photographer of the Year 2009”.

Alex is constantly contributing back to society, by means of photography. Some of the organizations he has contributed time to are the Singapore Children Society, the Boys Home and the Saint Andrew’s Cathedral Home for Aged. He had also attended pedagogy training with the Social Service Institute (SSI) to better understand and facilitate special needs children with learning disabilities through the medium of photography.With continued aspirations to promote better photography; he had also judged numerous photography competitions and has given talks to a wide span of audiences, both locally and overseas. He was invited to speak at various events, as such the South East Photography Symposium, the National Photography festival and Passion Arts Festival. His keynote speech delivered during the one of the events inspired over half a thousand young photographers to tell stories through the lenses of their cameras.

As part of his pursuit in continuous learning and to enrich his effectiveness as classroom practitioner he had achieved pedagogical accreditations with the, Ministry of Education (MOE) National Arts Council (NAC) and NIE International (NIEI). Alex is one who believes in promoting the art of photography and is active in the scene, having taught at various platforms like LASALLE College of the Arts, Canon Imaging Academy (Singapore), Ministry of Education (Singapore), Objectifs & ITE (Institute of Technical Education). He was also appointed as the official photography instructor at the Youth Olympics Games and the National University of Singapore’s Montage Festival.

For General Elections 2015 & 2020, he was selected as the official portraits’ photographer for all the Singapore’s Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament. One of the ministers was quoted saying, “Thank you (Alex) very much for your kindness, and for your cheerfulness and passion. It makes all the difference.” It is such recognition that fuels him in his continual pursuit of his craft. Alex believes that photography is borderless and holds no racial, cultural, religious or language barrier. In his words; he aims “To make the world a better place thru photography.”
